Building Community
Through Music in Flagstaff
Through community singing and inclusive music projects with local Flagstaff choirs and musicians, Meghan brings people together in welcoming spaces open to all voices and abilities. These gatherings offer opportunities to connect, create, and share in the joy of music — whether through song circles or collaborative music-making with other community groups.
Several of these programs are made possible through collaboration with the following non-profit organizations:
Greg Hill Fund for Music in Dementia
SongHearth
Monthly Community Singing in Flagstaff at First Friday ArtWalk
SongHearth is a monthly drop-in community singing gathering held during Flagstaff’s First Friday ArtWalk. Led by music therapist Meghan Callaghan and music educator Stephanie Galloway, SongHearth is open to all and offers an open invitation to drop in, raise your voice, and be part of an instant musical community — no prior singing experience needed.
The music is simple, teachable, and engaging. Participants may find themselves joining in on a call-and-response song, harmonizing with a community building anthem, or creating spontaneous riffs during an improvisational circlesing.
SongHearth is supported by the Greg Hill Fund for Music in Dementia and the Arizona Commission on the Arts through Lifelong Arts Engagement Grant. The gathering is intentionally welcoming to people living with memory loss and their care partners, while creating a joyful, inclusive space for the whole community.
Sound Connections
Intergenerational & Inclusive Community Music
Sound Connections is an intergenerational music program designed to create bridges between people of different ages, abilities, and life experiences through shared music-making.
In its first iteration at a Flagstaff senior center, the program brought together people with dementia and their caregivers, community members, the Flagstaff Ukulele Group, and Flagstaff Junior Academy elementary students for a joyful blend of singing, rhythm, and instrumental music.
The upcoming second iteration will invite community ensembles — such as school groups, music clubs, and local Flagstaff choirs — into existing music therapy groups in healthcare settings, fostering connection between residents, patients, and the wider Flagstaff community.
Activities may include singing, rhythm and percussion, movement, collaborative songwriting, and easy improvisation — centered on connection, accessibility, and lighthearted creativity.
Sound Connections is generously supported by the Greg Hill Fund for Music in Dementia, Creative Flagstaff, and the Arizona Community Foundation
Shirei Shabbat
Friday Evening Jewish Song Gathering
In partnership with Congregation Lev Shalom, Meghan co-leads Shirei Shabbat—a joyful, participatory singing circle to welcome Shabbat. Using familiar melodies and fresh settings for Jewish prayers and songs, it creates a warm and inclusive space for all — Jewish and non-Jewish friends alike — to share in music, community, and reflection.
